The first class I sat in on was developmental algebra. Most of the students were engaged and participating except for a few students in the back. I also observed that the students in the act had not completed their homework and did not understand how to do the lessons. i was able to use these observations to solidify my research question of What are African American children's attitudes towards STEM and how it affects their success. I talked to one of the professors about my question and she gave me some great advice on how to start the project. the children were not as interested din the res of the classes throughout the day. They participated in the english activity after they were offered a price for the first 3 people who correctly completed the activity. Some kids just needed a little push. After helping them with the first few sentences they were able to follow the pattern and complete the activity. A group of guys had one boy doing figuring out the work and then he would feed them the answers. After lunch they worked on their innovation projects. Only a few people in the groups did the work. During the innovation each group had a professor or male mentor assigned to them so we were not helpful. Overall I observed that most of the students were capable of doing the work they just need constant stimulation. It was easier for us to get them to do the work than it was for some of the professors.
